If you are new to caravan air conditioners, start with one simple question: where can the air conditioner actually fit on your van? From there, it is much easier to choose between a rooftop unit, an under-bunk unit, or parts for the air conditioner already fitted.
A rooftop air conditioner is the normal choice when the roof opening, roof thickness, roof strength and inside ceiling space all suit the unit. It saves cupboard space and is often the cleanest replacement when an older rooftop air conditioner is already fitted.
An under-bunk air conditioner can be better when roof space is tight, extra roof height is a problem, or you want to keep the roof clear for solar panels, hatches or racks. For a rooftop unit, measure the roof opening and check the roof thickness, roof strength, total van height, nearby solar panels, vents and the inside air distribution box. Power is the other early check. Most caravan air conditioners are 240V appliances, so compare running current, start-up current, generator or inverter capacity, and whether soft-start or inverter compressor features matter for the way you travel. A smaller caravan may not need the largest air conditioner, while a longer van, poor insulation, canvas-heavy layout or hot-climate touring can need more cooling capacity. If you are replacing an older Ibis, Harrier, Heron, Coleman, Dometic, AirCommand, Truma or Webasto unit, write down the exact model before ordering. Then measure the roof opening, old shroud size, total height, bolt position and inside ceiling assembly. A new unit may still fit, but the plenum, gasket, wiring and trim can change.
