Caravan Privacy Screens, Awning Shade Walls, End Walls & Tie Downs

The right privacy screen depends on four checks: where the screen will sit, what awning it fits, the actual width/drop, and how it ties down. Do those checks before choosing by colour or brand.

Pick the screen position first

Use side privacy screens for the main long wall under the awning, and end wall privacy screens when sun, wind or neighbours are coming from the awning end. If a mesh screen is not enough and you want a more enclosed setup, compare rollout awning walls and annex-style options instead.

Side screens are chosen by awning length and actual screen width. The range starts around 10ft with screens about 2750-2805mm wide, runs through common 13-16ft sizes, and goes up to 21ft screens around 6100mm wide. End walls are different: flat-top styles suit pop-tops, while sloped/angled styles suit full-height caravans and motorhomes.

Match the awning track and spline

Roll-out awnings such as Dometic, Carefree, Sunchaser and similar usually use a larger spline than cassette/box awnings. Many CGear rollout side screens use a 7mm spline. Camec dual-spline screens have both 5mm and 7mm rope tracks, which is useful when the awning track size is uncertain.

If you have a Fiamma or similar cassette awning, use the Fiamma awning screen path rather than assuming a normal roll-out awning screen will fit. The screen should slide into the track without forcing the fabric or lead bar. Use the privacy screen guide if you need more detail on roll-out awnings, box awnings, side walls and end walls.

Measure the width and drop

For roll-out awning side screens, measure between the centre of the awning legs and compare that to the screen width in the product title. The fabric is usually shorter than the quoted awning size, and a smaller screen can be used on a longer awning if you do not need full-length coverage.

Most standard side screens are 1800mm high. Black sunblocker screens are commonly 1950mm high, and CGear extra-drop side screens are 2000mm high. For end walls, also check the shape and top attachment: a Coast caravan end wall is about 2.1m wide, 2.35m high at the tall side and 1.9m at the low side, with 6mm spline and Velcro straps. CGear extra-drop caravan end walls are about 2.1m wide with a 2.5m high end and 2.0m low end, use 7mm rope track, and the zipper-door version adds an opening about 185cm high x 80cm wide.

Check mesh, hardware and wind setup

Privacy screens are usually open mesh, not waterproof solid walls. Coast screens are about 86% shade, while many CGear and Camec side screens are about 90% shade. That gives useful privacy and sun protection while still allowing airflow and outward visibility, but rain can still pass through mesh.

Check the supplied hardware before choosing purely on size. Camec and Coast often include ropes and pegs; CGear side screens may need separate pegs or tie-downs depending on the item. Look for stainless D-rings, reinforced webbing, Velcro straps on end walls, elastic tie-downs, and whether a carry bag is included.

Use awning tie-downs and setup hardware where needed, but do not overload the awning in strong wind. Privacy screens make the outdoor area more comfortable, but they also add wind load, so pack down when conditions are unsafe.
