Caravan Stabiliser Legs, AL-KO Corner Steadies, Wind Down Legs & Pads

Start by deciding whether you need to steady a parked van or lift it. Stabiliser legs and corner steadies stop movement after the caravan is level; they are not jacks for wheel changes or lifting work.

Choose the support job first

Use stabiliser legs when you are replacing a swing-down or wind-down corner steady. Use winders and feet when the leg is fine but you need a handle, foot plate, pin, pad or drill-style socket. If the job involves lifting the van, changing a wheel or carrying weight, use a rated caravan jack instead.

Level the caravan before you rely on the legs. Use the levelling guide for the full setup sequence: level across the wheels first with ramps or timber, use the jockey wheel for front-to-rear level, then lower the corner steadies to remove movement. Do not wind hard against the ground to lift the chassis; that can damage the internal gears and is outside the job these legs are built for.

Match the drop-down height range

AL-KO drop-down stabiliser legs use a 19mm hex drive, Big Foot base and quick-release red handle. The common vertical height ranges are 420-590mm, 500-740mm and 610-840mm, with a 125mm stowed height. Pick the range that covers your chassis-to-ground height after the van is already level.

Each AL-KO drop-down leg is supplied with a mounting bracket and bolts, but the hex winder handle is normally separate. The weld-on bracket is 110 x 75mm; if bolting to the frame, check the 100 x 65mm bracket face and 80mm hole centres. The internal bracket size is 110mm long x 65mm wide.

Check AL-KO, Manutec and wind-down styles

AL-KO drop-down legs rotate through 180 degrees, so the same style can usually be mounted left or right when the bracket matches. Manutec drop-down legs are a different fitment path; for example, the 660mm Manutec leg has a 520-660mm vertical range, weld-on bracket, bolts included, 30-degree angle settings and a 19mm hex head.

Older wind-down corner steadies are different again. They commonly come as 500mm, 600mm and 700mm front/rear legs, with bolt-on or weld-on versions. Match the existing leg length, mounting method, front/rear position and 19mm winder style before ordering by appearance.

Add feet, pads and winders where needed

Feet and pads help spread pressure on grass, dirt and soft ground. They make the setup steadier and reduce sinking, but they do not turn a stabiliser into a jack. Common support parts include Big Foot plates, stabiliser feet with pins, pull handles, 450mm/800mm/1150mm winders, 19mm drill sockets and universal joints.

If you are replacing a damaged leg, also check whether the failure came from using the leg as a jack or applying too much drill pressure. In that case, replacing only the foot or handle will not fix the problem; choose the correct leg or move to a proper jack for lifting work.
