If you are new to caravan heaters, start with the fuel and the install path. Most people are choosing between a diesel air heater, an LPG gas heater, or parts for a heater already fitted in the van.
Use diesel and gas heaters when you are choosing a complete heater kit. A diesel heater is usually the easier path for cold-weather free camping, especially if you want to save LPG for cooking and hot water. It still needs 12V power, a diesel tank or fuel supply, safe exhaust routing and good duct layout.

For many small to mid-size caravans, a 2kW diesel air heater is the normal starting point. A 5kW heater can suit larger vans, canvas-heavy campers or very cold touring, but oversizing can make the heater cycle too much, run sooty and feel too hot too quickly. For diesel heaters, plan the fuel tank position, fuel pump angle, exhaust route, combustion air path, hot-air ducting, outlet count and 12V cable run before ordering. Check the kit contents as well: controller, tank, ducting, exhaust, pump, mounting plate and install hardware vary between kits.
For gas heaters, check the cowl position, nearby windows, doors, annex areas, appliance clearances and pipe route before committing. Use the caravan gas installation guide and the regulator and gas hose guide early, not after the heater arrives.
Heater parts are model-specific. Before buying heater parts, write down the heater brand, model, controller type, duct diameter and cowl colour. Truma E2400, Truma VarioHeat, Autoterm, Webasto and Eberspacher parts can look similar but are not automatically interchangeable.
Use Truma E2400 parts or Truma VarioHeat parts for Truma repairs, Autoterm parts and Eberspacher parts for diesel heater repairs, and diesel fuel tanks when the heater kit does not solve the tank location cleanly.
