Guide to Awning Privacy Screens

Article by Steve Smith - Caravans Plus

Caravan awnings are great, but are you getting the most use out of yours?

The privacy screen revolution has seen this simple product become one of the most popular caravan accessories available today. Inexpensive and long lasting they are a great addition to any caravan awning.

Gone are the days of needing a bulky, expensive and hard to setup annexe. Privacy Screens are compact, lightweight and are quick and easy to setup. They can supply protection from the weather without imposing an enclosed feeling like a solid annexe. The advantage of screens is they can increase your comfort level in all conditions - they reduce windy gusts in bad weather, provide shade with air flow on hot days and even restrict rain access.

As the name suggests the privacy screens are ideal for use in more crowded locations. Reclaiming your outdoor space can double your living area and enable a more relaxed feel. The shade screens provide a personal barrier without completely blocking off the great outdoors.

Due to the different size mounting channels in Roll-out vs Box awning there are two main styles of screens available and they are not interchangeable. Roll out awnings like Carefree or Dometic require a screen with a larger diameter spline than Box awnings like Fiamma.

Screens for Roll-out Awnings

Side Screens - Long Wall

Made to suit awnings from 10 to 19 ft long. They have a rope sewn into the edge which slides into a track on your awning. They have eyelets or d-rings on the bottom edge which get pegged to the ground. The walls are made of a shade cloth with 90-95% shade depending on the brand.

We list both the physical size of the screen and the awning length they suit. The physical screen size will always be a foot shorter than the awning size. Smaller screens can always be fitted to larger awnings they just will not span the entire length.

When selecting a screen length you need to make sure you have measured your awning correctly. Awning size is measured between the centre of the legs not the awning fabric.

How to measure an awning

Due to the popularity of privacy screens the market has been flooded with a huge selection of different brands for the same product. With this in mind we have purposely limited our range so not to duplicate styles and simplify choice.

CGear are the original and considered the Premium brand, Coast version include pegs and ties with a reduced price and Supex provides a black option at an even cheaper price point.

For the end walls (front & rear screens)

When selecting an end wall screen there are two main screen styles:

  • Pop-top - Made with a square / flat top they are designed for use when the awning cross brace is close to horizontal as found on most pop-tops.
  • Caravan - Made with an angled / sloped top is designed to approximate your awning roof slope when attached to a full height caravan.

Both style have velcro straps to attach to the screen to the awning brace. Some of the Caravan / sloped versions also incorporates a rope spline which can be used in conjunction with roof brace like the Aussie Traveller Anti-flap kits.

Due the colour variations between suppliers if purchasing side and end screen we recommend sticking to same brand.

Making an annex from your awning

By adding waterproof walls all the way around your awning you can make a fully enclosed annex. These are pre-made to fit the standard length roll-out awnings and can suit a range of roof heights. They include windows with flyscreens and a door.

    Screens for Fiamma F45 Awnings

    For the long wall

To suit awnings from 2.5 to 4 metres long. They have a rope sewn into the edge which slides into a track on your awning. They have eyelets on the bottom edge which get pegged to the ground. The walls are made of a shade cloth with 90-95% shade.

    For the end walls

There is only one type of wall available and this comes as a kit with brackets and a rafter to attach the wall to. The wall is made of vinyl rather than shade cloth and has a large built in window.

Making an annex from your F45 awning

By adding waterproof walls all the way around your awning you can make a fully enclosed annex. Fiamma call these a PRIVACY ROOM. They are pre-made to fit the standard lengths with a couple of roof heights, and a folding flap at the base to cover additional heights. They include windows and a door.

      Frank

Yeah I love my screens! I have a question: When I put the side one up and the front, I , off course, end up with a triangle Shape open section , is there a triangle shape screen available?

Do you stock privacy screens suitable for off road caravans with a longer drop. 1800mm leaves too big a gap at the bottom.
