Guide to Awning Privacy Screens

1. Selecting the correct style and size awning screen

Caravan awnings are great, but are you getting the most use out of yours?

The privacy screen revolution has seen this simple product become one of the most popular caravan accessories available today. Inexpensive and long lasting, they are a great addition to any caravan awning.

Gone are the days of needing a bulky, expensive and hard to set up annexe. Privacy screens are compact, lightweight and quick to set up. They can supply protection from the weather without imposing an enclosed feeling like a solid annexe. The advantage of screens is they can increase your comfort level in all conditions - they reduce windy gusts in bad weather, provide shade with air flow on hot days and even restrict rain access.

As the name suggests, privacy screens are ideal for use in more crowded locations. Reclaiming your outdoor space can double your living area and enable a more relaxed feel. The shade screens provide a personal barrier without completely blocking off the great outdoors.

Due to the different size mounting channels in roll-out and box awnings, there are two main styles of screens available and they are not interchangeable. Roll-out awnings like Carefree or Dometic require a screen with a larger diameter spline than box awnings like Fiamma.

2. Screens for roll-out awnings

Side screens - long wall

Made to suit awnings from 10 to 19 ft long. They have a rope sewn into the edge which slides into a track on your awning. They have eyelets or d-rings on the bottom edge which get pegged to the ground. The walls are made of a shade cloth with 90-95% shade depending on the brand.

We list both the physical size of the screen and the awning length they suit. The physical screen size will always be a foot shorter than the awning size. Smaller screens can be fitted to larger awnings, they just will not span the entire length.

When selecting a screen length you need to make sure you have measured your awning correctly. Awning size is measured between the centre of the legs, not the awning fabric.

How to measure an awning screen length from the centre of the legs

Due to the popularity of privacy screens, the market has been flooded with a huge selection of different brands for the same product. With this in mind we have purposely limited our range so not to duplicate styles and simplify choice.

CGear are the original and considered the premium brand, Coast versions include pegs and ties with a reduced price, and Supex provides a black option at an even cheaper price point.

For the end walls (front and rear screens)

When selecting an end wall screen there are two main screen styles:

Pop-top screen vs caravan screen

Both styles have velcro straps to attach the screen to the awning brace. Some of the caravan or sloped versions also incorporate a rope spline which can be used in conjunction with a roof brace like the Aussie Traveller Anti-flap kits.

Due to the colour variations between suppliers, if purchasing side and end screens we recommend sticking to the same brand.

Making an annexe from your awning

By adding waterproof walls all the way around your awning you can make a fully enclosed annexe. These are pre-made to fit the standard length roll-out awnings and can suit a range of roof heights. They include windows with flyscreens and a door.

3. Screens for Fiamma F45 awnings

For the long wall

To suit awnings from 2.5 to 4 metres long. They have a rope sewn into the edge which slides into a track on your awning. They have eyelets on the bottom edge which get pegged to the ground. The walls are made of a shade cloth with 90-95% shade.

For the end walls

There is only one type of wall available and this comes as a kit with brackets and a rafter to attach the wall to. The wall is made of vinyl rather than shade cloth and has a large built-in window.

4. Common fitment questions

Will a roll-out awning screen fit a Fiamma or box awning?

Not usually. The spline size is different between most roll-out awnings and box or cassette awnings. Check the track size and match the screen style to the awning brand before ordering. If your track measures around 8 mm, do not assume a roll-out awning screen will slide in cleanly.

What if the screen leaves a gap at the bottom?

Some off-road caravans and higher vans sit taller than standard, so a common 1800 mm drop may leave more gap than expected. Check the product's listed drop height and measure from the awning track to the ground at your normal camp setup height before ordering.

Can I close the triangle gap between a side screen and front screen?

The triangle gap is created by the slope and angle of the awning roof. Standard side and front screens do not always close that shape completely, so check whether the brand you are buying offers a matching infill, rafter, or end-wall solution for your awning style.

Are fridge shade screens the same product?

No. Fridge shade screens are a smaller shade product for fridge vents and are not the same as awning privacy screens. They are normally found with fridge accessories rather than awning walls.

Will any annexe fit any awning?

No. Annexe walls and privacy rooms need to match the awning type, length, roof height and fitting method. Fiamma Caravanstore, Fiamma F45, Dometic, Carefree and Aussie Traveller awnings can use different parts, so identify the awning model first and then choose walls made for that system.
