Review of Caravans Plus Service
Great product and good price
Dometic have been suppling RV Awnings to the Australian Caravan Industry for many years now. In that time there has been a few key models of Roll-Out awnings. As the company has evolved the awnings have been branded under a variety of names
Regardless of the branding the original core range included the following models: 8300, 8500 & 9000. In recent years the 9000 model was made obsolete, and a universal hardware kit was introduced to cover all 3 models. In late 2020 Dometic introduced the 8700 Awning, the new model replaces both the 8300 and 8500 condensing the Dometic awning range further and enabling the streamlining of components to suit the current (8700) and previous models of A&E Roll Out Awnings (8300, 8500 and 9000)
While the choice of fabric colours profiles has been reduced to black to white or white to black, the mounting hardware options has stayed the same.
There are 3 sizes of 8700 awning hardware available and they can be used with your existing awning barrels if required. Matching the earlier versions they are based on the amount of space/height your trailer has available to mount the hardware. It is recommended to install the largest unit that will fit on your RV.
If you are looking to replace some or all your existing arms or rafters you can determine your current hardware size by measuring your Main Arm and matching to one of the following sizes:
The one known limitation of the new range is if you have an 8300 awning and are hoping to replace a Torsion / Spring Assembly. Due to the mounting style (Top Caps) on the 8700 Torsion Springs repairing an 8300 awning roller may be considered uneconomical. This is because both sides require matching springs (ie 8700) to function, in this case a complete awning roller may be a more suitable solution. If you are repairing an 8500 or 9000 awning the springs can be replaced independently with the 8700 version.
If you are looking for spare parts for your Dometic awning, it is important to first identify which model you have. Here we will show you the differences between the 3 earlier models of Dometic Roll Out Awning - 8300, 8500 & 9000.
The easiest way to correctly identify your Dometic Awning model is to look at the roller end caps. The Dometic 8300 Awnings have a hollow roller shaft with an outside diameter of 18.5mm.
Unlike the 8300, the roller shaft for Dometic 8500 Awnings is solid and has a smaller diameter of 10mm. The 8500 also has the cap that holds the roller onto the top of the arms attached to the roller shaft.
Dometic 9000 Awnings have the same solid roller shaft and attached cap as the 8500 model. The 9000 however has aluminium sections on the first part of the canopy to protect it from the sun when rolled up.
You can also use the Model number of your awning to identify if it is an 8300 or 8500. Examples of model numbers are shown below, with the model and length highlighted.
For Dometic rollout awnings do not measure the vinyl. This is true for new awnings and for the replacement vinyl. You need to measure from the centre of the arm to the centre of the arm. See the image below
Do NOT measure the fabric

We have an AW 300 manual awning. The left hand end cap on the roller has split. The internal rod has snapped at that end, across the hole in it. Although it is quite old, it is in good condition except for the aforementioned troubles. Sourcing spare parts seems impossible. Any ideas?

Where on the caravan awning frame can I find the awning brand name and model number please?
Jeff
If you haven’t found it it should be on the end of the roller. You will need to roll the awning fully out.
