Instantaneous Gas Water Heater Customer Service and Technical Staff Manual
Product Overview
The Instantaneous Gas Water Heater (Model: IWH) is designed for installation in recreational vehicles (RVs) and is not intended for residential, space heating, or marine applications. It operates by heating water with a temperature rise of 25°C above ambient at a flow rate of 6 liters per minute. Exceeding this flow rate may result in cooler water output. In very low ambient temperatures, the water in the supply tank may be cold, affecting the heater's output temperature.
Safety Warnings
- Fire or Explosion Risk: Failure to follow instructions may result in fire, explosion, property damage, personal injury, or death. Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
- Gas Leak Action Plan: If you smell gas, evacuate the area, shut off the gas supply, do not touch electrical switches, do not start the vehicle or any electrical generator, and contact a qualified service technician or emergency services.
- Installation: Must be performed by a licensed gas fitter service agency or the gas supplier. Incorrect installation voids warranty.
- Scalding Risk: To prevent scalding, water supplied to the shower and hand basin must pass through a tempering valve limiting water temperature to 50 degrees Celsius. Recommended valve: John Guest tempering valve (15mm, code: XXXX).
- Compliance: Installation must comply with the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) and local requirements.
Installation Instructions
Critical Installation Warnings
- Install in RVs only. Ensure adequate combustion air supply from outside the RV and vent products of combustion outside.
- Do not vent with another appliance. Install on an exterior wall with access door opening to the outdoors.
- Do not modify or attempt to use with a positive grounding system.
- Ensure the water heater is installed by authorized personnel following local gas fitting regulations, municipal building codes, electrical wiring regulations, local water supply regulations, and other statutory regulations.
Installation Steps
- Surface Mount Installation: Surround the opening on the coach skin with 4 to 6 inches of masking tape to protect the skin. Cut a rectangular hole with dimensions of 330mm width and 380mm height at the selected position. Center the heater in the opening and secure the top center screw. Apply silicone or appropriate sealant under the flanges, then secure the unit with the remaining screws. Seal the corners and flange edges with heavy sealant application.
- Gas Supply Connection: Connect an approved gas line to the 3/8" SAE male gas inlet using an approved sealant. The gas supply pipe must have a minimum diameter of 5mm. Ensure the gas line is securely fastened and leak-tested with soapy water or a leak detector.
- Water Supply and Outlet Connection: Connect the cold water inlet and hot water outlet using standard 1/2" male fittings. Use a rubber seal or removable sealants for connections. Ensure the water line fittings are backed up with a wrench to avoid damage to the copper tubing. Purge the system of air before use.
Electrical and Remote Control Connection
The heater operates on 12VDC with a maximum current of 1.5A. Connect the power leads to the RV's 12V system via a breaking switch for safety. Red wire is positive, black wire is negative. Use a minimum of 0.5mm² wire with a temperature rating of 105°C. Connect to a breaker rated at 5A.
Operating Instructions
- Pressurize the water system by turning on the pump or connecting to city water.
- Purge air from the system by opening taps until a steady stream of water flows.
- Turn on the 12VDC power supply. The remote control displays the last selected temperature. The default preset temperature is 50°C.
- Adjust the desired water temperature using the remote control buttons.
- Turn on the gas supply at the tank and any manual gas valve in the system. The heater remains dormant until a water tap is opened, triggering the flow sensor and igniting the burner automatically.
- Hot water delivery starts within seconds. Adjust the water flow rate if the temperature does not meet the desired setting.
Troubleshooting
- E1: Burner did not ignite. Check LPG cylinder valve and refill if empty.
- E2 to E8: Various sensor and controller faults. Check connections and sensors for damage or obstruction. Refer to the wiring diagram and error code chart for specific diagnostics.
- No Hot Water: Ensure electrical connectors are secure, power is on, and the panel breaker is not tripped. Verify gas supply valve is open and there is gas in the tank.
Maintenance
- Clean tap aerators and showerheads regularly.
- Annually inspect by a qualified technician. Check for debris in air inlets, exhaust, and around the burner. Ensure mounting is secure and there are no water leaks.
- Inspect wiring for damage or chafing. Verify flame appearance is normal (blue with no yellow tips) and exhaust is clear of soot.
Winterizing and Draining
Do not operate below freezing without antifreeze protection. To drain, turn off water pump and gas, open drain valve to a 45° position, and open a hot water tap to vent the system.
