Many horse float and double horse float owners add caravan-style accessories to make travel days easier. Common fitout upgrades include an awning, water tank, external shower, kitchenette, camping mat, step, storage, and a simple sleeping area.

Start With The Fitout Plan

Before buying parts, decide what the float needs to do. A day float used for shows may only need shade, water and storage. A gooseneck or larger angle-load float with living quarters may need a more complete caravan-style fitout.

• Keep horse safety first. Do not add sharp edges, loose furniture, or fittings that can move in transit.
• Check payload and ball weight before adding tanks, batteries, cabinetry or appliances.
• Keep access clear for loading, tying, feeding, cleaning and emergency horse handling.
• Use sealed, washable surfaces where mud, manure, feed and water can collect.
• Plan ventilation before adding sleeping areas, kitchens, fridges or enclosed storage.

Awning And Outside Living

An awning is one of the most useful upgrades because it creates shade beside the float without taking up internal space. The mounting surface must be strong enough, straight enough, and high enough for the awning case and brackets.

For shows and weekend events, a mat under the awning keeps the living area cleaner and reduces mud being walked back into the float.

Water And Plumbing

A basic water setup can be as simple as a tank, hand pump or 12V pump, hose, filler and tap. Larger fitouts may add an external shower, sink, grey-water container, or hot water system.

Water is heavy. A full 80L tank adds about 80kg before the tank, brackets and plumbing are counted. Mount tanks securely and low, and think about weight distribution before placing them on one side of the float.

Kitchen, Storage And Sleeping

Kitchenettes and storage work best when they are simple and easy to clean. Use strong latches, avoid loose appliances, and keep heavy items low. If you add a bed or bunk, make sure it does not block exits or service access.

Good storage matters in horse floats because tack, feed, water fittings, hoses and camping gear all compete for space. Plan where wet, dirty and clean items will live before installing cupboards.

Power, Gas And Safety Checks

Keep electrical and gas work inside the rules. DIY fitout planning is fine, but 240V electrical work, gas work, and structural modifications should be handled by licensed or suitably qualified trades.

• Use 12V products and protected wiring where practical.
• Use proper fusing, cable size and battery mounting.
• Keep vents and gas appliance clearances as specified by the manufacturer.
• Do not drill structural members without understanding the float construction.
• Check registration, insurance and weight compliance after major changes.
