Genius®BMPRO Genius-II Power Supply Technical and Customer Service Manual
Introduction
The Genius-II Power Supply is designed for use in caravans and similar recreational vehicles, providing a DC power system with optional battery backup. It operates from 240 Vac and delivers an isolated 13.65 Vdc output at 35 A for powering loads and charging the caravan battery. It includes protection and operating features for both the load and battery, with an optional DC input for charging from an external +13.8 V DC source.
Safety Precautions
- Ensure good ventilation around the battery area.
- Not intended for use by young children or infirm persons without supervision.
- Batteries can supply high short circuit currents; handle with caution.
- Remove personal metal items to prevent short circuits.
- Incorrect installation can lead to property damage or personal injury.
- Ensure correct polarity and protection against accidental short circuits when connecting cables to batteries.
- Disconnect power supply from mains before servicing a battery.
- Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries.
- Prevent water or other liquids from entering the installation area.
Installation
Personnel
Installation should only be performed by qualified personnel.
Ventilation, Orientation, and Thermal Considerations
- Preferably mount with cooling fins vertical and ensure at least 80 mm of free air space above and below for optimal cooling.
- Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent overheating.
- The unit has over-temperature protection and will shut down if internal temperatures exceed safe levels.
Mounting
Securely mount using the pre-drilled mounting brackets. Refer to the provided dimensional details for accurate installation.
Mains Cable
- The supply cord is pre-cabled and fitted with an AS/NZ mains plug.
- Ensure compliance with national wiring rules and proper earth connection.
Connections
Load, Battery, and External DC Input
- Follow the wiring diagram for correct connections.
- Use recommended wire sizes based on current requirements.
- Protect wires from damage, especially when passing through panels or walls.
Remote Load-Isolator Switch Connection
Allows for remote control of load connections. When closed, all loads are disconnected from power, without affecting battery charging.
Battery Management
Connection/Disconnection Procedure
Follow the specified steps for connecting or disconnecting the battery to minimize the risk of spark generation.
Batteries
- Suitable for charging 12 V Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) batteries, including VRLA, AGM, and Gel Batteries up to 300 Ah capacity.
- Charging current is limited to 15 A or 30 A depending on the model.
Paralleling Batteries
When paralleling batteries, ensure they are of the same type, capacity, manufacturer, and are fully charged before connection.
Storage
For long-term storage, fully charge the battery and disconnect all loads. Recharge at least once every 6 months to prevent deep discharge.
Deeply Discharged Batteries
The Genius-II is not designed to charge deeply discharged batteries. If a battery becomes deeply discharged, it may need to be charged with a stand-alone charger before reinstallation.
Servicing
- Only qualified service personnel may service the unit.
- No internal user serviceable parts except for the fuses located in the terminal block area.
Functional Description
- Provides isolated 13.65 V DC output for load powering and battery charging.
